Women in Agroecology

You are here:

Agroecology is not just a farming method for us, nor is it a struggle against nature. It’s about coexisting with nature and nurturing rich biodiversity on our farmland, creating a harmonious ecosystem that supports sustainable livelihood.”

~ Mulin, a woman farmer in Vikalpani ~

Women farmers connected with Vikalpani practice agroecology as a sustainable alternative to conventional, chemical-based agriculture. They understand agroecology as a holistic approach that offers solutions to various challenges associated with industrial farming, including high input costs, excessive water and labor consumption, biodiversity degradation, loss of seed sovereignty, and limited market access.

A key requirement for membership in Vikalpani is the willingness to practice agroecology on their farmland, whether for personal consumption or commercial purposes. Today, Vikalpani collaborates with over 350 women farmers who actively implement agroecological practices. Their knowledge and experience have reached thousands of visitors and farmers who come to Vikalpani farmlands to learn about agroecology.

To support and expand this movement, Vikalpani has developed comprehensive manuals on agroecology including the principles and established field learning sites where visitors and farmers can gain hands-on experience from knowledgeable women farmers. Additionally, Vikalpani has trained a network of skilled trainers who provide agroecology training to communities, empowering more farmers to transition to sustainable practices.

Through agroecology, Vikalpani is enabling women farmers to build resilient, biodiverse, and thriving agricultural systems that coexist harmoniously with nature.
